Introduction: Repricing on eBay

In contrast to platforms such as Amazon, where a unique product identifier in the form of an ASIN is used, eBay works differently. Here, each seller creates their own individual offer for a product. This means that we have to actively search for competitors ourselves in order to make our prices competitive.

Cassini: eBay's search algorithm

Cassini is the powerful search algorithm that eBay uses to determine the relevance and positioning of listings in search results. To improve the ranking of your listings and achieve greater visibility, you should consider the following factors:

  • Item characteristics: Make sure you provide all relevant item characteristics completely and accurately. The more relevant information you provide, the more likely it is that Cassini will consider your listing relevant to search queries.
  • Product description:** Write detailed and appealing product descriptions. Clarify what benefits the product offers, how it is used and why it might be of interest to potential buyers.
  • Images:** High quality images are very important. They should show the product from different angles and make details clearly visible. This will increase buyer confidence and make them more likely to click on your listing.
  • Clear title:** The title of your listing should be precise and contain the most important information about the product. Use relevant keywords to increase the likelihood of your listing showing up for relevant searches.

Search terms: The key to analysing the competition

The use of suitable search terms is crucial for finding competitors for your offers and successfully implementing your repricing strategy. The quality of your search terms has a significant impact on how effectively your listing is found compared to others in the marketplace. We would like to help you select and set the optimal search terms for your products. By using search terms correctly, you can ensure that your listings are displayed prominently in relevant searches and gain a better understanding of the competition on eBay.

Item page

Items

The article page is an overview of your articles. Here you can search for information and products on the marketplace in a targeted and efficient manner. You will find functions such as a user-friendly search function for targeted research, a practical filter function for narrowing down the results according to individual preferences and a clear list of your articles available on the marketplace. In addition, you can use the sorting function to determine the order in which your articles are displayed. This well-thought-out structure creates an intuitive and informative environment in which you can easily find your way around and quickly find what you are looking for.

You can use the search function to search for one or more items.

It is possible to find items based on the following points:

  • the ebay ID
  • the SKU
  • the item name

Below the search function, you can see how many items match your current search filter.

Tip: You can also use placeholders such as % or _. A percent sign allows any number of characters between the terms, while an underscore replaces exactly one character.

Filter function

You will find the filter function under the funnel symbol in the top bar.

Items - Save searches

Item

Item

The item view is divided into three parts, with item information such as SKU, ebay ID, search rank etc. displayed in the upper third. The lower area is again divided into two parts, in the left area the repricing settings are made, in the right area the relevant prices of the item are displayed, e.g. the current lowest retailer price, the prices optimized by us, as well as the current online price.

Clicking on the retailer name opens the detailed view in the Offer overview tab.

In the info area of the article you can see how the search ramg of your article is positioned in comparison to the competition. In this case, there are a total of 17 suppliers for this item and you are in second place on the list.

A central element of the "Item area" is the comprehensive "Item detail view". This gives you insights into various aspects of a product that are crucial for repricing and competitive analysis. The item detail view is divided into several tabs, each of which presents specific information and data.

Item detail view

The item detail view provides a comprehensive overview of various aspects of a product that are of great importance for repricing and competitive analysis on eBay. Several tabs are available within this view, each displaying specific information and data:

Item info

Item detail view - Item info

In the "Item info" tab you will find important details about the selected item:

  • Item name: The name or description of the product to uniquely identify it.
  • eBay ID and SKU The unique identifier of the item on eBay to distinguish it from other listings.

Search term - Optimise your search terms for effective repricing on eBay

Choosing the right search terms is at the heart of a successful repricing process on eBay. To ensure that you achieve the best possible results, we offer you a powerful solution for generating precise and relevant search terms with our "Search term optimisation" section. Working with our experts, you have the opportunity to optimise your search terms and create a solid foundation for your re-pricing.

TIP As the quality of your search terms has a significant influence on the success of your RePricing, we are happy to help you refine and optimise your search terms.

In the "Search term optimisation" section, you benefit from a user-friendly interface that makes it easier for you to create and adapt your search terms. This section presents various search methods and modes that will help you to search for specific products and refine your repricing strategy.

Search methods at a glance

Item detail view - Search term

  • Search mode: Select the appropriate search mode for your needs. For example, opt for "By search term (advanced)" to achieve more comprehensive search results, or use "By product" to search for specific product identifiers such as EAN or eBay ePID.
  • Avoiding sources of error: We would like to point out how an incorrect choice of search terms can lead to inaccurate or misleading results. For example, if you are selling an iPhone and use the search term "football".
  • Current search term: The search term currently used is displayed here to provide you with full transparency at all times.
  • Item characteristics: You can view the current item characteristics that are set for your products on eBay.

TIP
Our software can also automatically generate search terms for you based on your item characteristics.

Refinement with logical operators

For all search methods except "by product ID", powerful logical operators are available to further refine your search terms:

  • Quotation marks (" "): By placing keywords in inverted commas, you command the search engine to find entries that contain the exact phrase enclosed. For example, searching for "vintage leather coat" will return results containing this exact phrase.
  • AND operator: By default, the eBay search engine treats multiple keywords as if they were joined by the AND operator. If you search for "smartphone case", you will get results that contain both the word "smartphone" and "case".
  • OR operator: Using brackets ( ), the OR operator allows you to search for entries that contain either one keyword or another. The search for (red, blue) returns results that mention either "red" or "blue".
  • NOT operator (-): By adding a minus sign in front of a keyword, you exclude entries that contain this keyword in the results. A search for "camera -Nikon" shows cameras, but excludes entries with the brand "Nikon".
  • Placeholder character (*): The asterisk symbol is used as a placeholder to display any character in a search term. "House*" corresponds to "house" as well as "houses" or "pets".

With "search term optimisation", we offer you a comprehensive platform to optimise your search and create the basis for successful re-pricing on eBay. Let's refine your search terms together and take your RePricing strategy to the next level.

You can find out more about logical operators in the official documentation.

eSagu search engine optimisation (SEO)

Item detail view - SEO

With eSagu Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), the item characteristics, category and title can be edited. The article characteristics and all other settings can be changed at any time.

Caution: If the article features are also managed via the merchandise management system, conflicts may occur and the settings may be overwritten.

The following sections are available:

Main article properties:

  • Title: You can edit the title of your item here. An appealing title can increase the visibility of your article.
  • Item status: Select the status of your item from the options provided.
  • Item images: Add images to present your item in a visually appealing way.

Item category:

  • Category (the eBay category) Select the appropriate category for your item from the eBay category list.
  • Only allowed categories? Check whether your item should only be displayed in the selected categories.

Attention! It takes some time for eBay to update the category. In addition, eBay only accepts the category change if the selection is valid for the listed item.

Required, recommended and optional item features vary depending on the item. We recommend that you always specify the categories and item characteristics as precisely as possible. This will help your product to be found better by Casinni (eBay search function) and our software can generate better search terms for you.

Optimisation

There are four different approaches to adjusting the pricing of an item. The repricing strategies include optimisation by rank, optimisation by price, the fixed price method and the use of an individual custom code for adjustment. Below is a concise explanation of each of these methods, followed by a detailed description.

Optimisation by rank

Optimisation by price, on the other hand, is based on a broader range of suppliers. It compares your own item price with the cheapest available offer among all suppliers found. This method takes into account a broader database and ensures that the item is offered at a competitive price, regardless of the individual ranking positions of the competitors.

Optimisation by price

With the optimisation by rank method, a comprehensive analysis is carried out that enables the item price to be set competitively. This involves a direct comparison with the most favourable providers within the first top 5 ranks. This ranking list is based on the services and offers of the competitors. We receive the ranking list directly from eBay or Cassini based on the search term and the search filter. Through this analysis, potential price adjustments can be identified to ensure that the item remains attractive in terms of price within the competitive comparison.

Fixed price

The fixed price method makes it possible to set a static price for the item that remains independent of fluctuations in the competitive environment. With this strategy, the price is not automatically adjusted but remains constant until a manual change is made. This can be advantageous if a more stable pricing strategy is desired and no regular adjustments are required.

The fixed price method is recommended, for example, for products such as limited editions of collector's items where the manufacturer has set clear price targets and an unchanged pricing strategy is required to maintain the value and exclusivity of the item.

customCode

Would you like to optimise your items in a different way than mentioned above? Then a customCode (CC) could be just the thing for you.

With a CC, our IT team can define special rules for your articles. For example, your own brands can be optimised based on past sales. If sales are high, the price is optimised upwards; if sales fall, the price is lowered again.

customCode

Tip If you would like to find out more about a CC, please ask your account manager.

Strategy

The "Strategy" tab is a crucial area in which you can define and refine your repricing strategy on eBay. Here you have the opportunity to adjust various parameters and settings to make your prices competitive and get the best results from your repricing process. This section covers the following topics in detail:

Price gaps

Strategy - Price gaps

Price gaps are the centrepiece of your repricing strategy. They serve as the basis for setting your offer prices in comparison to your competitors. By setting the right price gaps, you can make your products more attractive and maximise your sales opportunities.

Variant Boost

The "Variants Boost" offers three different levels to adjust the prices of product variants: low, medium and high. This powerful tool allows you to adjust prices individually for different variants to optimise your sales strategy.

If you notice that certain variants of your product are selling more slowly, you can set the "Variant Boost" to low to increase the attractiveness of these variants. This can help to boost sales and make customers more aware of these products.

In contrast, you can set the "Variant Boost" to high if you want your best-selling variants to achieve a higher profit margin. By increasing the price of these variants, you can increase your profitability and at the same time capitalise on the high demand.

Strategy - Variant Boost

The middle level of "Variant Boost" offers a balanced adjustment of prices for different variants. This can be useful to achieve a combination of increasing sales and maximising profits without introducing extreme price fluctuations.

Overall, Variant Boost allows you to set flexible and targeted pricing to meet individual sales and profit targets for each product variant. This can significantly support your overall strategy to increase sales and maximise profits.

Customised price gaps

Customised price gaps allow you to make specific adjustments to price gaps tailored to specific competitors. This allows you to control your repricing strategy more precisely and helps you to target individual competitors more effectively.

Price gaps according to item condition

In addition to competitors, condition-specific price gaps are also supported. The following prioritisation is used:

  1. Seller name + item condition: Takes both criteria into account.
  2. Seller name: Used if there is no exact match.
  3. Item condition: If no match with seller name, item condition is used.
  4. Global: Default value if specific details are missing.

The condition-specific price range feature is useful because it allows you to precisely adjust prices based on the condition of the items. For example, used items in good condition can compete better against used or refurbished items in average condition. This allows sellers to optimise pricing to be more competitive while maximising their profit margins. This differentiation improves sales opportunities and positions items more favourably on eBay.

Search filter

Strategy - Search filter

The "search filter" is a powerful tool for efficiently identifying the offers that are relevant to your repricing strategy. By using search filters, you can search specifically for offers that match your defined criteria.

Attention
Never put yourself on the blacklist! If you blacklist yourself as a retailer, RePricing may not function correctly.

Basic settings

  • Name of the search filter: Name your search filter so that it is easy to find and use later.
  • Sort order: Specify how the search results should be sorted, set to "Best match" by default.
  • Search in description: Activate this option to also search for your search terms in the item descriptions.
  • Hide duplicates: Filter duplicate offers from the search results to improve the overview.
  • Only authorised dealers: Limit the search to trusted and authorised dealers.

Advanced settings

  • Ratings: Define a minimum number of ratings to prioritise established and reliable retailers.
  • Price range: Set a price range to only consider offers within this range. This can be useful if, for example, you sell high-priced items and do not want to compare yourself with cheaper accessories.
  • Exclude category: Exclude certain eBay categories from the search to increase the relevance of the results, e.g. to prevent an iPhone from being compared with iPhone protective cases.
  • Item condition: Filter listings according to their condition, e.g. only "New" or "Used".
  • Dealer blacklist or whitelist: Define a list of dealers to be included or excluded.
  • Processing time: Filter offers based on the seller's processing time to promote fast deliveries.
  • Listing type: Select the eBay listing type, e.g. Buy It Now or Auction.
  • Category filter: Select how the item's categories should be compared. Compare with the category of the item: The items must all be in the same product category. For a car battery, for example, Motors -> Car & Motorbike: Parts -> Car Parts & Accessories -> Car Electrics -> Batteries Compare with the parent category of the item: The items must at least all be in the same parent category (one level up in the hierarchy) For a car battery, for example, Motors -> Car & Motorbike: Parts -> Car parts & accessories -> Car electrics -> Batteries Compare with the root category of the item: The items must at least be in the same main category. For a car battery, for example, Motors -> Car & Motorbike: Parts -> Car Parts & Accessories -> Car Electrics -> Batteries
  • Seller type: Limit the search to companies or private sellers.
  • Seller location: Filter listings by seller location to prioritise listings from specific countries, for example.

By precisely configuring these search filters, you can ensure that you only consider the relevant offers for your repricing strategy while minimising manual work. This allows you to make informed decisions and adjust your prices intelligently.

Automatic pricing rules

This allows properties to be automatically assigned to new items. This section is divided into two parts: Strategies and Price Assignment.

Strategy - Automatic pricing rules

Strategies:

Under this section, various steps can be taken to automatically assign properties:

  • A search filter can be selected by using a template.
  • Price intervals can be set using a template.
  • Search terms can be generated automatically to better optimise the items.
  • Items can be assigned to a custom code.

Price task:

In this section, price rules can be created that are applied when items are imported.

Stop words

This section is relevant for the automatic generation of search terms. There are two lists of stop words that can be considered: Item characteristics or Title. It is possible to exclude the following words from search term generation.

Strategy - Stop words

Search terms with AI support

Search terms can be generated with AI support. To do this, you must store an OpenAi API key and specify a prompt.

You can find help on this under Storing a prompt for search term generation and under Storing an OpenAI API key

Global settings

Strategy - Global settings

The global settings are divided into two sections: Optimisation and Expert settings.

Optimisation:

The activation of the upload can be defined here. If this function is deactivated, no price updates will be sent from eSagu to eBay.

The expert settings can also be displayed.

Expert settings:

Please consult with your Account Manager before making any changes to the Global Settings.

The following settings can be made in this section:

  • The use of "RelistParentId" is enabled.
  • The stock level can be updated automatically.
  • There is an option to perform the stock update every x hours.
  • Offers with quantity 0 are checked.
  • Expired offers from the last few days can be updated.

Bulk Editing

With the help of bulk editing, all items or individual item groups can be filtered and edited. Bulk editing is especially useful to correct missing price settings or change stored optimization rules.

Individual Steps

Bulk editing is carried out in 4 steps:

Step 1: Filter

Article groups can be filtered here using various criteria:

  • Item title
  • SKU of the items
  • A specific price range
  • A shipping method
  • The price option
  • Price status, whether the item is at the minimum or maximum price
  • Condition of the item (used or new) and intermediate levels
  • Inclusion of items with quantity 0
  • Items without a price rule
  • Items without competitors

Tip We recommend that you always switch on the "Include quantity 0 items" option in most cases.

Bulk Edit - Filter

Step 2: Preview

In this step, all items that match the selected filter are displayed. This is useful to verify whether the correct filter is set.

Step 3: Tasks

Here you can select which settings should apply to the selected items.

You can make the following settings:

  • Strategies: Options for changing the strategies
  • Price settings: Options for changing the stored prices

Bulk Edit - Tasks

Strategies

  • Price gap
  • Exceptions
  • Shipping costs
  • Custom Code

Price settings

Price option: Selection of the current price on the basis of which the prices are to be adjusted.

Adjustment type: Absolute or percentage, based on which price.

Attention: We advise against making "small changes" using mass processing!

Price task for: The individual price options can be set to a specific value here.

Step 4: Apply

In the final step, the changes in the articles are summarized and applied. Depending on the number of affected articles, this may take some time.

Bulk Edit - Apply

Mass editing in action

One possible application of mass editing is the generation of search terms.
The following three options are currently available for this.

  • Generate search terms based on the article characteristics
  • Generate search term using AI
  • Search for the product ID
  • Generate search term from the title

The option "Generate search term using AI" is only available if an OpenAi API key and a prompt have been stored. You can find help on this under Storing a prompt for search term generation and under Storing an OpenAI API key

Storing a prompt for search term generation

Go to Strategy in the navigation bar and select the Search filter tab and then the Search terms with AI support sub-tab. You can now enter a prompt here. A prompt is a type of instruction that you give the AI to generate search terms. Please note that the prompt must be clear and precise so that the AI delivers the desired results.

Strategy - Search terms with AI support

Store and define prompt

Create the prompt with the following placeholders, which are automatically replaced for each article:

  • [ITEM_TITLE] (Required): The title of the item.
  • [ITEM_SPECIFICS] (Optional): The item characteristics that can be used to generate the search term.
  • [ITEM_STOPWORDS] (Optional): Stop words that are ignored when generating the search term.

A simple example would be: "Generate eBay search terms for '[ITEM_TITLE]' using '[ITEM_SPECIFICS]', avoid the use of '[ITEM_STOPWORDS]'."

Setting the OpenAI parameters

This determines how strictly the AI interprets the specifications in the prompt. You can choose from three predefined settings:

  • Strict: With this option, the AI adheres strictly to the prompt specifications.
  • Balanced: This setting attempts to provide a balanced mix of results without being too strict or too loose.
  • Creative: Here the AI becomes a little more creative and potentially delivers more unconventional results.

Storing an OpenAI API key

OpenAI Account

Go to Strategy in the navigation bar and select the Search filter tab and then the OpenAI Account sub-tab. You can now store an OpenAI API key here.

You can find detailed instructions on how to create a new OpenAi API key here: How to: Create an OpenAi API key

CSV Files

At eSagu, you have the option to create multiple templates with the exact required columns. To do this, start by creating one or more CSV export templates. These can be used anytime when a new export is needed.

To import or export CSV files, click on "CSV Files" under your RePricing service.

How to Create a Template

You can create CSV export templates by clicking on "Add" in the top right corner and making sure you are on the "Templates" tab. There you must:

  1. Give the template a name and set the format for number formatting.
  2. Select the fields that should be exported.
  3. Click "Save".

You can find the details behind each column here: CSV File Format.

CSV Files - Template

Requesting and Downloading CSV Files

  1. To create a CSV file, click on the corresponding template name under "CSV Files" and then click "Request File".
  2. The desired file will now be created and available within the next few minutes. The processing time may take a while depending on the number of items.
  3. Once the status of the requested file changes from "Requested" to "Completed", you can click on the Download button and download the file.

CSV Files - Export

Importing CSV Files

  1. To import a CSV file, click on "Import CSV file" in the top left-hand corner.
  2. You will now be prompted to select the file you want to import.
  3. After selecting the file, you will be asked about minimum price protection. More information about minimum price protection can be found here: Minimum Price Protection.
  4. The status of your import can be viewed in the import history in the "Imports" tab.

If an error message appears during the import of the CSV file, formatting is often the issue. For the correct formatting, you can find more information here: CSV File Format.

CSV Files - Import

Minimum price protection

Minimum price protection ensures that price changes do not deviate from the previously set price by more than a certain percentage. This function is used to protect you from gross errors when interacting with your spreadsheet, for example, if a price of €123 has suddenly become €1.23.

CSV format page

If you receive an error message when importing your CSV file, this can often be due to the formatting. If you receive an error message when importing your CSV file, this is often due to the formatting. For the correct formatting, you can find information on the CSV file format here: CSV file format

Common problems and solutions

Special case: Analysing search terms taking quantities into account

Challenge: As a repricing customer, I want to ensure that my products are optimally found on eBay. It is particularly important to me that different quantities of competitor products are also taken into account when analysing the search terms. The aim is to select relevant and competitive keywords that target comparable offers. In this way, I want to ensure that my products are visible in the search results for the same quantities and that I achieve a better market position.

Solution approaches:

  1. Manual creation of search terms: Search terms can be created individually for specific requirements, such as different container sizes for motor oil. This can be prepared in spreadsheets, for example, and then integrated into the eBay search queries.

Example of a search term:

brand oil (1234567891234,11111444444) (‘5 litres’,‘5L’) -(1L,2L,3L,6L,7L,10L,25L,‘1 litre’,‘2 litres’,‘3 litres’,‘6 litres’,‘7 litres’,‘10 litres’,‘25 litres’,2x5L,3x5L,5x5L,‘3x5 litres’,‘4x5 litres’)

2 Automated generation with AI: The function "Search terms with AI support ’ offers a quick and efficient alternative. Here, a customised prompt is passed to the AI, which automatically generates relevant search terms based on article characteristics. These can be used directly in the user interface without the need for manual steps.

Example prompt for ChatGPT:

Create a search term for an eBay item based on item characteristics such as EAN and manufacturer number. If it is a motor oil item, also use the quantity in litres (e.g. ‘5 litres’, ‘6 litres’) and exclude other containers such as 1L, 2L, 3L, etc. as well as bundles (e.g. 2x5L, 3x5L).

3 Price range filter: For a quick analysis, the Price range filter can be used in the Search filter. These help to identify relevant competitor products in certain price ranges, which often correlate with specific quantities.
